Filthy Queens: A History of Beer in Ireland, Nine Bean Rows 2025

In Filthy Queens, we look at the history of beer alongside some of the biggest events in the story of Ireland. You’ll find an 18th-century courtesan who had a wicked streak of beer snobbery and early medieval monks who wrote beer reviews so terrible, any Untappd fan would feel right at home.
There will be beer tastings, parties, music, and wakes. You’ll meet thieves and murderers, saints and goddesses. You’ll hear stories of kings and paupers, witches and bishops, Irish, English, and Vikings from the Late Iron Age all the way up to the early 20th century.
Oh, and don’t forget the zombies. We’ve been drinking beer for millennia, so it’s a perfect way to embrace the past and those who lived in it. In the end, you’ll see that the history of beer is intimately intertwined with the history of us.
And in other news, I will be returning to posting here and bringing back the historical cooking series, but you can also catch my content first on my substack or follow me on Bluesky.

The Devil’s In the Draught Lines: 1000 Years of Women in Britain’s Beer History, CAMRA Books, 2024

‘CAMRA’s exciting new book The Devil’s in the Draught Lines: 1000 Years of Women in Britain’s Beer History by Dr Christina Wade is a ground-breaking publication which charts the rise and fall – and rise again – of women in Britain’s brewing trade. Meticulously researched, it chronicles and explains the real reasons why women brewers became marginalised, while also debunking some tired old myths along the way.
The publication features interviews with some of the most influential women working in the contemporary beer industry. From award-winning beer writers and educators such as Laura Hadland, Ruvani de Silva, Natalya Watson and Jane Peyton, to brewers and pub owners including Lucy and Lizzie Stevens of Closet Brewing and Helena Adedipe of Eko Brewery, the book offers some incredible insights into the beer world and its history.’
